Menopause is a natural transition that occurs over time which signals the beginning of mature feminine life. Velvet Bean (Mucuna pruriens) seeds contain high concentrations of levodopa, a direct precursor of the neurotransmitter dopamine. It has long been used in traditional Ayurvedic Indian medicine. The mature seeds of the plant contain about 3.1-6.1% L-dopa with trace amounts of 5-hydroxytryptamine (serotonin).

Vinitrox (Grape and Apple) is a unique combination of grape and apple concentrates, with high polyphenol content. Strong polyphenol activity is extremely important against the peroxynitrite free radical. Among many other damaging activities, the peroxynitrite free radical reduces testosterone levels. Flax lignans are known to promote healthy hormone function women, with research showing specific benefits in the breasts, reproductive tissues and the menstrual cycle. Recent research has shown that supplementation of flax can increase phytoestrogen levels in postmenopausal women (when testosterone is often at its lowest levels in women).  The results showed that flax supplementation increase levels significantly more than placebo or supplementation of soy.[3] 

Dietary lignans are found in various foods, such as sesame seed, broccoli, grains, and even red wine,  but none of these foods comes close to the concentration in flaxseed (300,000 mcg /100 g). Secoisolariciresinol is the lignan in flaxseed that occurs in the highest concentration (165759 mcg / 100 g; the next highest food [sesame seed]) has 240 mcg / 100 g). Attached to two glucose molecules, the compound as it occurs in flaxseed is secoisolariciresinol diglycoside (SDG). During the process of digestion, SDG is converted to enterolactone, and can be further converted into enterodiol (both phytoestrogens).

Clinical trials of flaxseed supplementation in premenopausal women demonstrated the possibility of reduced breast pain and tenderness (during the menstrual period) and decreased estrogen concentration during the menstrual cycle. No significant side effects have been noted.

Cardiovascular health – Multiple studies have found that the flax lignan, SDG, plays an important role in cardiovascular health. The mechanism is believed to be at least partially associated with the lignan’s antioxidant activity. In fact, SDG has been shown to have antioxidant activity up to five times greater than that of vitamin E.

Another mechanism by which SDG may improve cardiovascular health involves a reduction of bad cholesterol. Researchers have found flaxseed can reduce total cholesterol, and particularly bad (LDL) cholesterol levels. While the exact mechanisms of action have not been fully revealed, it is believed that it may work through a mechanism similar to that of soluble fiber, by directly interfering with the body’s ability to absorb certain fats.

Extended release of nutrients

Extended release of nutrients provides significant advantages over the common capsule or tablet delivery methods. In order to better understand the ways in which this new technology improves the effects of nutrients, a brief review of digestion kinetics is in order.

Although digestion starts in the mouth, this review will begin with the stomach because tablets and capsules undergo insignificant digestion in the mouth and are delivered quickly to the stomach, where the majority of digestion occurs. In the aqueous environment of the stomach, two major events occur. The first is that the foods, nutrients, supplements, etc., are hydrated – that is, water is added to them. This allows digestive agents, like hydrochloric acid and enzymes, to infiltrate solid materials and render their nutrients soluble. It also provides a watery medium, which carries free molecules of nutrients away from solid food substances, allowing them to come into contact with the absorptive walls of the later portions of the gastrointestinal tract.

A very important concept here is that the solid matrix of most foods prevents interior molecules from making contact with absorptive surfaces of the GI tract, and therefore requires water to be transported into a liquid environment. That is why most nutrients must await digestion before they can be exposed and absorbed. Capsules and most tablets avoid this delay by disintegrating rapidly in the stomach. Faster disintegration increases the speed of transit into the small intestines, where the liberated nutrients or phytomedicines can be absorbed. The more solid materials travel more slowly, which is actually an adaptation to allow the intestines to further digest foods and liberate more nutrients embedded in solid food matrices.

It should be noted that a speedier transit time through the small intestines results in reduced absorption of nutrients. Some speculate that this is a result of an overload, and that the intestines can only absorb a finite amount of any particular nutrient at any given time. Once all absorption sites are filled it takes time to regenerate that site. Nutrients that are coursing through the GI tract very fast won’t wait around for a free absorption site on the inner wall of the intestines, so they simply pass through. Other researchers suggest that even in the absence of an overload, fast-moving nutrients undergo poorer absorption because they are simply less likely to come into contact with an appropriate absorption site long enough to be absorbed into the blood. It is easy to see that the form of foods ingested influences the levels of nutrients in the blood stream. For example, the proteins within a piece of steak require much more time and work to be absorbed into the blood than those in a protein shake or a soup.

But there are other factors that influence the levels of nutrients in the blood stream. One of the greatest barriers to nutrient retention is the body’s own housekeeping system. The filtering action of the liver tends to remove many nutrients, as well as toxins, from the bloodstream. Some are removed so quickly that they are completely eliminated from the circulatory system after only a few trips through the body. For many nutrients, like those in Optimum Female, a longer duration in the bloodstream is preferable because it helps to ensure a longer duration in the body’s blood vessels where they can protect against atherosclerotic plaques. An herbal phytomedicine that is quickly absorbed and quickly eliminated by the liver cannot offer as much protection as one that remains in the blood for a longer period of time. Extending the absorption time of a phytomedicine prolongs the time it is able to protect the bloodstream.

Taking supplements is like having a pail of water to keep a plant alive in a hot desert. The water is equivalent to the nutrient, protective against the harsh environment. Meanwhile the hot sun acts like the liver, vital to life, yet constantly causing the water to evaporate. You can dump the whole pail of water onto the plant, making it cool and wet for a little while. But after a couple of hours, when the sun has evaporated all of the water from the soil, you will be left with a dehydrated dead plant and an empty pail. A better way of keeping your plant alive would be to rig the pail so that it slowly drips its protective water onto the plant over the course of many hours.

There are only a few ways to sustain the release of nutrients in the body, most of which require the use of sugars, starches, waxes, gums, resins and other synthetic materials. However, Nature’s Plus 100% natural vegetable cellulose base is the key to the manufacture of our extended release tablets.

When the tablet is ingested, the normal moisture in the digestive system quickly dissolves the thin layer of pharmaceutical glaze. The natural vegetable micro-gel system then begins to absorb moisture and slowly swells, releasing standardized extract at a slow, gradual and relatively predictable pace over an 8 to 12 hour period. Approximately 30% of the ingredients are released in the first hour, and the remainder is released gradually over an 8 to 12 hour period, regardless of the motility of the digestive system. The vegetable micro-gel is dissolved and digested by the digestive system as normal vegetable cellulose from plants. This special formula provides a 40% better utilization rate than our regular tablets. The above chart shows blood level data taken from human subjects, comparing the blood levels of the active ingredient after ingestion of a typical product with those after ingestion of an equivalent Amino Man’s Extended Release product.

The blood levels of the active ingredient in the individuals taking the regular product increase rapidly for the first 4 hours, drop off rapidly over the next 5 hours, and then slowly decrease throughout the rest of the 48-hour period. The blood levels of the active ingredient in individuals who have taken the Extended Release product also increase rapidly over the first 6 hours, then increase more slowly for 12 hours, and then slowly decrease throughout rest of the 48-hour period.

Please note that the bioavailability of the active ingredient in the Extended Release product is 40% greater than regular products, so the blood levels indicate that the Optimum Female Extended Release tablet allows for 40% greater utilization of the active ingredient in the product ingested.
