AquaCelle® CoQ10 uses a self-microemulsifying drug delivery system (SMEDDS) to overcome the poor water solubility of standard CoQ10 ubiquinone, significantly enhancing absorption and bioavailability. The following summarises the key research supporting CoQ10 and the AquaCelle® delivery technology.

1. AquaCelle® Enhanced Absorption Technology

Standard CoQ10 ubiquinone has inherently poor bioavailability due to its large molecular size and lipophilic nature. AquaCelle® uses a self-microemulsifying system that spontaneously forms nano-sized droplets in the gastrointestinal tract, dramatically increasing the surface area available for absorption. Studies on SMEDDS-based CoQ10 formulations demonstrate significantly higher plasma CoQ10 levels compared to conventional powder or oil-based capsules.

2. Cellular Energy Production

CoQ10 is an indispensable component of the mitochondrial electron transport chain, facilitating the transfer of electrons between complexes I, II, and III to drive ATP synthesis. Every cell in the body depends on this process for energy, with the heart, brain, liver, and skeletal muscle having the greatest CoQ10 requirements. Natural CoQ10 levels decline significantly with age, making supplementation increasingly relevant from the fourth decade onwards.

3. Cardiovascular Support

CoQ10 is highly concentrated in cardiac tissue and plays a critical role in maintaining myocardial energy supply. The Q-SYMBIO trial — a multicentre, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study — demonstrated that CoQ10 supplementation (300 mg/day) significantly reduced major adverse cardiovascular events and cardiovascular mortality in patients with chronic heart failure over a 2-year period.

4. Antioxidant Defence

CoQ10 functions as a lipid-soluble antioxidant, protecting mitochondrial membranes and circulating lipoproteins from oxidative damage. It also regenerates other antioxidants including vitamin E. Clinical studies confirm that CoQ10 supplementation reduces circulating markers of oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation, which are associated with ageing and chronic disease risk.

5. Statin-Induced CoQ10 Depletion

Statins inhibit the mevalonate pathway, which is responsible for both cholesterol and CoQ10 synthesis. This results in measurable reductions in plasma and muscle CoQ10 levels, which may contribute to statin-associated myopathy. Multiple studies have shown that CoQ10 supplementation can restore depleted levels and may help reduce muscle-related side effects in statin users.
