R5 Aminos is a multi-ingredient recovery formula combining amino acids, minerals, and B-vitamins specifically selected for their roles in post-exercise recovery, nervous system support, and sleep quality. The following summarises the key research behind its core ingredients.

1. Magnesium — Muscle Function & Sleep

Magnesium contributes to normal muscle function, the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, and normal psychological function (EFSA-approved claims). A randomised double-blind trial found that magnesium supplementation significantly improved sleep efficiency, sleep time, and early morning awakening in older adults, alongside reductions in serum cortisol.

Reference: Abbasi B et al. Journal of Research in Medical Sciences (2012). The effect of magnesium supplementation on primary insomnia in elderly.

2. Zinc — Testosterone, Immunity & Recovery

Zinc contributes to normal testosterone levels in the blood, normal immune function, and the protection of cells from oxidative stress (EFSA-approved). Research in athletes has shown that zinc depletion through sweat loss can impair recovery and immune function, and that supplementation restores these markers.

Reference: Prasad AS. Nutrition (2012). Discovery of human zinc deficiency: its impact on human health and disease.

3. Ashwagandha (KSM-66) — Stress & Recovery

Ashwagandha is one of the most clinically validated adaptogenic herbs. A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial demonstrated that 300 mg of KSM-66 ashwagandha twice daily significantly reduced perceived stress scores and serum cortisol by 27.9%, while improving sleep quality and overall wellbeing.

Reference: Chandrasekhar K et al. Indian Journal of Psychological Medicine (2012). A prospective, randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled study of safety and efficacy of a high-concentration full-spectrum extract of ashwagandha root.

4. 5-HTP — Serotonin & Sleep Quality

5-HTP is a direct precursor to serotonin and melatonin. Clinical evidence supports its role in improving sleep onset, sleep quality, and mood regulation. Studies show that 5-HTP crosses the blood-brain barrier and increases central serotonin synthesis more effectively than tryptophan alone.

Reference: Turner EH et al. Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine (2006). Serotonin a la carte: supplementation with the serotonin precursor 5-hydroxytryptophan.

5. B-Vitamins (B6, Methylfolate, B12) — Energy & Nervous System

B6, folate, and B12 are essential for normal energy-yielding metabolism, the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, and normal functioning of the nervous system (EFSA-approved claims). Methylfolate (5-MTHF) is the bioactive form of folate, bypassing the MTHFR conversion step and offering superior bioavailability compared to folic acid.

Reference: Stover PJ. Nutrition Reviews (2004). Physiology of folate and vitamin B12 in health and disease.

6. NAC (N-Acetyl Cysteine) — Antioxidant Defence

NAC is a precursor to glutathione, the body's primary endogenous antioxidant. Research in athletes demonstrates that NAC supplementation reduces exercise-induced oxidative stress and muscle fatigue, supporting faster recovery from intense training.

Reference: Medved I et al. Journal of Applied Physiology (2004). N-acetylcysteine enhances muscle cysteine and glutathione availability and attenuates fatigue during prolonged exercise in endurance-trained individuals.
