Menopause is a natural transition that occurs over time which signals the beginning of mature feminine life. With dynamic body chemistry changes, this stage of aging for females can often cause hormone imbalances which can cause several uncomfortable side effects like hot flashes, mood swings, sleeplessness, lack of concentration and loss of libido. During menopause and the surrounding stages (perimenopause, pre-menopause and post menopause) female hormones such as estrogen, progesterone and FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) levels change. Some women use Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) as a treatment for the symptoms of menopause; however, this is a non-natural approach to achieving hormone balance that frequently comes with dangerous side effects, especially in combination with other age related medications.

Natural hormone balancing is possible with the right combination of vitamins, minerals and herbs that support both hormone production and hormone metabolism so that a healthy balance can be achieved. Over the years herbal menopausal remedies have been scientifically tested for their efficacy in relieving menopausal symptoms, allowing women to age naturally and gracefully. Several studies have shown statistically significant results in improvement of hormone imbalance symptoms compared to a placebo-control for nutrients and herbs such as vitamin E, maca, valerian root, flax and velvet bean.
While there are several hormones that are factors in female health and sexual function, testosterone plays a major role in a female’s libido. It is probably fair to say that most people associate testosterone with men and masculinity. Few are aware of the importance of testosterone in women. Testosterone fills many of the same roles in women as it does in men, including immune function, reproductive and sexual function, muscle function as well as muscle growth. Restoring normal levels improves overall strength and athletic performance. However, to maintain femininity, testosterone should only be increased naturally and in balance with the other important female hormones, such as estrogen and progesterone.

Women tend to have much less of the primary sex–stimulatory hormone, testosterone. Indeed, the ultimate male hormone, testosterone, is known to be the primary sexual stimulator in women. Although in much smaller quantities, women produce their own testosterone, which enhances their sex drive. But a number of factors can diminish or even stop testosterone production. Menopause is the primary cause of testosterone depletion and subsequent loss of sex drive in women. Estrogen and testosterone replacement therapy alleviates hot flashes and increases sexual desire, as well as such sex-enhancing factors as vaginal lubrication and genital blood flow. But the risks are great with such prescription drugs. All women respond differently to testosterone. One woman may experience very few side effects from a small amount of exogenous testosterone, while another woman would experience an increased risk of breast cancer and masculinization, such as facial hair, from the same quantity.

The risk of side effects has made many women turn to alternatives such as nutritional supplements. A well-designed supplement will provide precursors of testosterone and other hormones, as well as nutrients that support hormonal balance. This allows a woman’s body to produce the sex-stimulating hormones it needs and not extra, thus avoiding the side effects of masculinization. It will also provide nutrients that enhance blood flow and promote lubrication. Amino Man’s Optimum Female II is just such a supplement.

KEY BENEFITS OF HEALTHY HORMONE BALANCE FOR WOMEN
Brain Function: Healthy Hormone Balance influences overall brain function, as well as:
· Mood
· Motivation
· Sleep Function
· Cognition
· Memory
· Libido

Energy: Women with healthy hormone levels report increased energy and improved overall strength and stamina.

Cardiovascular Function: Improving estrogen balance has long been known to promote cardiovascular health, including that of the coronary arteries and arterial walls.

Immune Function: Immune function improves as a woman’s estrogen–testosterone balance improves. Meanwhile synthetic hormones are believed to diminish immune function.
Reproductive and Sexual Function: Estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and a host of other hormones are essential for women’s virility and sexual function. Restoring balanced hormone levels improves both, while also improving intimacy and sensuality.

Muscle Structure and Function: Few are aware of the importance of testosterone in women. Testosterone is essential for muscle function as well as muscle growth. Restoring normal levels improves overall strength and athletic performance. However, to maintain femininity, testosterone should only be increased naturally and in balance with the other important female hormones, such as estrogen and progesterone.

INGREDIENT HIGHLIGHTS
Agnus Castus:

A traditional herb used to assist symptoms of PMS and PMT. https://www.bmj.com/content/322/7279/134

Therapeutic Indications

On the basis of clinical trials and the clinical experience of phytotherapists, Vitex is indicated for the following conditions:

• Any premenstrual aggravation
• Secondary amennorrhoea
• Oligomenorrhoea and polymenorrhoea
• Menorrhagia from functional causes
• Insufficiency of lactation
• Pain at ovulation
• Acne in males and females
• Infertility and hormonal problems caused by
- anovulatory cycles
- low progesterone levels
- latent hyperprolactinaemia
• Relative progesterone deficiency, especially cystic hyperplasia of the endometrium (unopposed oestrogen)
• Conditions where oestrogen plays a role may also respond to Vitex treatment eg fibroids, endometriosis, follicular ovarian cysts.

It is my experience that Vitex can aggravate pure spasmodic dysmenorrhoea not associated with PMS. This may be due to the priming effect of progesterone on endometrial postaglandin release during the initial stages of menstruation. However, Vitex is usually beneficial for spasmodic dysmenorrhoea associated with PMS and for congestive dysmenorrhoea.

Maca (Lepidium meyenii root) is an extremely hardy mountainous plant from Peru; the root has served as a diet staple there for thousands of years; and research supports several of its medicinal purposes. Known as the women’s herbal libido booster, research shows improvements in a range of women’s hormones, including testosterone, progesterone and most important, the estrogen–testosterone balance. This extraordinary root, rich in amino acids and fatty acids, is also included in this formula for its effects on healthy brain function and increasing energy, stamina and endurance.

MACA
Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is also referred to as Peruvian ginseng . Its constituents (alkaloids, steroids, glucosinolates, isothicyanates and macamides) are probably responsible for its adaptogenic, aphrodisiac, immune-stimulating, anabolic and hormonal aptitudes . Maca also contains good amounts B vitamins and antioxidant vitamins C and E .

There is good evidence from animal tests for the anti-fatigue effects of various constituents of maca. Macamides were assessed in a study of rats subjected to forced swimming task. The study showed macamides improved endurance capacity explained partly by reduction of oxidative stress as measured by various parameters including total glutathione . A 2016 study with mice found significant effects on various parameters attributing the anti-fatigue effect of macamides on modulation of energy metabolism and improved antioxidant—superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase—status .

A 2004 study using mice subjected to a swimming test showed maca restored homeostasis impaired by stress in relation to incidence of ulcers, effect on glucose and corticosterone levels, and weight of adrenal glands .
With regards to exercise performance in humans, in a randomised crossover design placebo study of 8 trained male cyclists undertaking a 40 km cycling task, maca showed improved cycling time performance and sexual desire following 14 days supplementation .

A 2012 paper on the effects of maca describes the plant as an adaptogen and ‘energizer’ . In addition to libido-boosting effects , human studies have shown reduction in anxiety and depression . Maca roots vary by type, as evidenced by colour; all colour varieties were shown to have anti-depressant effect .

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) – Ginger has multiple benefits for women’s health. While ginger has been traditionally used to settle the stomach and intestines, women are also finding that it helps to ease menstrual cramps.
Lemon Balm

Is used traditionally to help manage symptoms of stress and anxiety. It can also help memory and cognitive function, assist sleep and menstrual cramping. Research also suggests, nausea and headaches may improve with supplementation with lemon balm. (source https://www.healthline.com/health/lemon-balm-uses#nausea).

Raspberry Leaf Extract
Red raspberry leaf tea is especially popular due to its possible benefits for pregnant women. However, it seems to help women in general.

In fact, it’s often referred to as the woman’s herb.
Some research supports the anecdotal evidence of women saying that the leaves help relieve premenstrual symptoms (PMS), such as cramping, vomiting, nausea and diarrhea (2Trusted Source, 4Trusted Source).

Red raspberry leaves contain fragarine, a plant compound that helps tone and tighten muscles in the pelvic area, which may reduce the menstrual cramping caused by the spasms of these muscles (4Trusted Source).
While there is currently no specific recommendation on the quantity to drink, sipping on some red raspberry leaf tea may relieve some of the discomforts of your menstrual cycle.

Vitamin E has testosterone boosting properties that can increase a woman’s sexual drive and preserve a fleeting libido. Vitamin E has also been shown to improve other menopausal symptoms such as, vaginal dryness and hot flashes. A double-blind, placebo controlled study conducted in 2007 showed results of a statistically significant difference in hot flash severity score and their daily frequency between the placebo and the use of vitamin E therapy. The conclusion of the study recommends vitamin E as a remedy for the relief of hot flashes.[1]

B Vitamins- B vitamin supplementation is a common suggestion by many doctors for older women, especially during menopause because of the advantages like reducing blood cholesterol (niacin), lowering cholesterol coagulation (B6), improvement of mood (B12) and enhancement of memory function (B12).

Only recently have scientists identified blood flow as one of the primary reasons for the centuries-old Asian tradition of using ginger to enhance the sensual experience of sex. Landmark research by Masters and Johnson has proven that both sensuality and sexual function are physiologically linked to heart rate and blood flow. Sensual thoughts are known to increase heart rate and blood flow. But what Masters and Johnson discovered is far more impressive: heart rate and blood flow actually promote sexual arousal. Even artificially induced increases in heart rate and blood flow have a measurable effect on thoughts of sex. It was discovered that such heart rate-increasing factors as caffeine intake or walking over a high bridge will cause both men and women to rate members of the opposite sex as more sexually appealing on a scale of one to ten. This is why ginger, which enhances cardiovascular function and blood flow, is considered a good sexuality-enhancing nutrient.
